TERRIFIED car passengers were rammed and nearly forced off the road by a complete stranger in the centre of Ottery St Mary on Monday night.

The trio, aged between 18 and 21, said they were travelling down Silver Street in pouring rain at around 7pm when a mystery driver began to tailgate them while revving his engine and shouting out of his window. The driver then crashed into the back of the youngsters' Nissan Micra before overtaking and accelerating off.

One passenger, who didn't want to be named, said: "My fist thought was it was someone messing about, but then he rammed into us. He was leaning out of his window ad shouting."

The trio immediately sought help from the nearby Ottery police station.

The shocked Nissan driver described the incident as "scary".
