OWNERS of thatched-roof homes in Ottery and Sidmouth have been urged to have their chimneys swept regularly to avoid blaze drama.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service says crews have attended several major thatch fires in recent weeks. A service spokesperson said: “In periods of prolonged dry weather the thatch dries out and that the majority of fires occur from ejected embers, often generated during the lighting of the fire, rather than defects in chimneys or heat conducted through the structure.

“We recommend that owners of thatched properties get their chimney swept at least twice a year and consider the prevalent weather conditions before having a fire, as when the thatch has been dry for some time it is more vulnerable to ember-ignited thatch fires than when it is continuously damp in the autumn or winter.”
