Trustees at The Donkey Sanctuary have appointed a new chief executive officer after an international search.

Mike Baker has a long and distinguished career associated with the animal welfare sector and has specific experience of equine-related issues.

He will be taking over the top job in May from David Cook, who retires after an enormously successful nine years in charge in which he took the charity to new heights in terms of reach and impact.

Professor Stuart Reid, the chairman of the trustees, said: “We are delighted to welcome Mike to The Donkey Sanctuary and are confident that he will build on the amazing legacy of David Cook. Staying true to the original vision of our founder, Dr Elisabeth Svendsen, we will continue to pursue our mission of assisting donkeys in need wherever they may be, as well as enriching the lives of those who depend upon them. With a strong strategic plan, a recent rebranding and well-advanced plans for our HQ in Devon, Mike will be taking over from David at an exciting time in our history.”

Mr Baker said: “I am truly honoured to be the next CEO of this remarkable organisation. I look forward to working with the excellent team and building on the success of David Cook and, of course, Dr Svendsen. It will be challenging and exciting but above all I know we will continue to alleviate suffering of donkeys worldwide and making a difference to those people who depend upon them.”
