NEWTON Poppleford Brownies are sure to sleep well after raising money for charity during a dream themed performance.

The youngsters turned their meeting on Monday, March 30 into an awareness and fundraising event for the Railway Children Charity, which supports young people living on the streets.

They had chosen this particular charity out of a number of different organisations taking part in the Girlguiding UK Changing the World project.

The girls spent weeks learning about what it is like for runaways to be homeless, cold, hungry and scared, and the term culminated in the 'power of dreams' fundraising event.

During the term the youngsters shared their own dreams for the future and compared them to those of the runaway children.

They also made dreamcatchers, built shelters, listened to true stories and made up short dramas.

On the last evening of term they raised 54 after inviting parents to watch their performance.

Leader Chris Chapman, known by the girls as Otter, said: "GirlguidingUK is a girl-led organisation with the girls being encouraged to make decisions about the activities they take part in.

"From the start, the brownies made their own decisions about which charity to support by having a democratic vote.

"The entertainment was devised and led by them, and the adults provided the backup support and encouragement when it was needed.

"I am very proud of their efforts which were as much about raising awareness of the work of the charity as about fundraising.
