Thousands of pounds worth of work repairing Sidmouth’s seawall started this week.
Large chunks of the seawall where ripped away when winter storms battered the town’s seafront.
East Devon District Council (EDDC) set aside £16,000 to repair the damages caused.
Works began on Monday as part of the first phase, to fix a sizable whole in the wall – costing more than £5,200. It’s expected that the repairs will be completed by Monday.
An EDDC spokeswoman said: “The repairs to the toe of the seawall by the Royal York Hotel in Sidmouth have been costed at £5,267.53.
“The damage was caused by winter storms, most noticeably Storm Brian and Ex-Hurricane Ophelia last winter. Further repairs to the seawall are due to be completed at Jacob’s Ladder/Undercliff in the near future.
“In total, £16,000 has been allotted for repairs to the seawall. We have an annual program of inspections of important infrastructure such as sea walls, with maintenance arising as a matter of course and part of our work to protect our outstanding environment.”
