TIGHT-LIPPED Tipton school-kids who kept schtum for a whole day have raised 700 for Comic Relief.

Primary School Pupils in the village devised, organised and carried out a sponsored silence for today's charity event last Thursday and have been busy counting the cash in their lunch breaks.

Four to eleven year-olds from every class took part, with pupils writing to parents in a bid for pledges.

Headteacher Penny Burnside enjoyed the day of unusual serenity and joked: "It was money well-spent by the parents."

She said: "The children have been great, this has totally been their idea. The older ones found it easy to stay silent and communicate in writing but the younger ones had to resort to pointing at things."

"It's fantastic to see how they have taken the project on so well.
