Cycling heroes Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish MBE could be among the line up in this year’s Tour of Britain following the competition’s team announcement.

Crowds across East Devon could see the British stars in action when the tour comes to Sidmouth in September as Devon County Council (DCC) announced 10 WorldTour teams - including the teams of Wiggins and Cavendish have been confirmed for the competition.

Sidmouth will host the start of stage six of the world famous competition with cyclists passing through Ottery St Mary and Honiton on the way to Haytor on Friday, September 9.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, DCC’s cabinet member for highways, said: “This summer will be incredible for British cycling. We are faced with the exciting possibility of Sir Bradley Wiggins, fresh from the Rio Olympics returning to the Tour for what may be his last competitive race on British soil.”

The team line up also boasts Team Dimension Data which is the team of British cyclist Mark Cavendish MBE.

Cllr Hughes added: “Mark Cavendish has won four stages in this year’s Tour de France, and with his team also confirmed we could see two of the superstars of British Cycling battle it out from Sidmouth to Haytor.

“It’s shaping up to be another exciting Devon stage and we’re expecting huge crowds right along the route to see some of the biggest names in professional cycling.

“Haytor, the only summit finish in this year’s Tour, could make Devon a crucial stage in the race and may even point the way as to who will win the overall race. That means all eyes around the world will be on our county, which is ideal for the local economy in terms of attracting visitors and demonstrating that we are a cycling county.”

Tour of Britain race director Mick Bennett said: “This is a world-class line-up of teams entirely befitting of the Tour of Britain’s continuing growth in stature and importance on the global cycling calendar.

“Half of the teams selected are currently racing in the Tour de France, giving British fans a taste of the high-level of competition which they can look forward to watching this September.”

Stage six is being hosted by Devon County Council and partners East Devon District Council, Sidmouth Town Council, Teignbridge District Council and Dartmoor National Park and takes place on Friday 9 September.
