Wet and windy weather caused chaos when it brought a tree down on a Sidmouth street during rush hour.
A storm brought it down on Station Road, forcing drivers to take an alternative route.
Nick Hall, of nearby Alexandria Road, said many motorists ignored the police diversion signs and had to make three point turns when they reached the fallen tree.
