Tree-mendous Christmas festival at parish church

Organisers of Ottery’s annual Christmas tree festival have praised the ‘fantastic’ array of entries.
The event, which began on Wednesday, has seen an increase in participants from 47 to 52 - with a number of new businesses and groups signing up to decorate a tree.
Carol Bennett, festival organiser, said: “It looks absolutely fantastic. When we started six years ago, we had about 30 trees and it’s increased every year.”
Visitors can go into the parish church for free, but are encouraged to leave a donation.
The money will be used by the Friends of Ottery St Mary Parish Church to enhance the religious building.
Mrs Bennett added: “We rely on donations.
“We are here to enhance the beauty of the church and make it a comfortable place for people to come in and visit.”
Visitors have been treated to a range of homemade food prepared by Sheila Williams and a team of volunteers, including homemade biscuits, soup, cakes and afternoon tea. The event will run until Sunday afternoon. Doors are open between 11am and 5pm each day.
Refreshments are not available on Sunday.
