SIDMOUTH experienced its full share of the violent gale which raged throughout the country, and more particularly the south of England, on Monday. A fresh south-west wind prevailed during the morning, which in the early afternoon was accompanied by drenching showers of rain.

A MOST enjoyable outing was organised by the Sidmouth Women’s Conservative Association on Thursday. It took the form of a tour by char-a-banc of the greater part of the constituency. The party left town in beautiful weather, proceeding to Beer and Seaton, then on to Lyme Regis, the only place touched outside the constituency. From there they went to Uplyme, Axminster and Honiton and Broadhembury.

AFTER twice having to postpone because of rain, the Sidmouth Lawn Tennis Club held a successful mixed doubles American tournament on Saturday, September 10. Fourteen couples, including entries from Exmouth, Exeter, Seaton, Honiton and Sidmouth, took part and the winners were S Crump and B Cayless from Exmouth

TWO young people from Sidmouth who exchanged motor scooters were each fined �1 at Exeter Magistrates’ Court yesterday. Michael John Pike, of Lymebourne Park, pleaded guilty to riding a scooter while not covered by insurance, in Paris Street, Exeter, on August 24, and Margaret Ann Foale, of Westcliffe Hall Hotel, admitted that she allowed him to ride her scooter without insurance.

A REQUEST for lighting at Alma Path near Sidmouth seafront has been rejected by East Devon District Council’s amenities committee. Members heard on Tuesday that the cost of providing two lamp posts for the path was about �2,800. Sidmouth Town Council was asked for its views and felt that the lighting was not necessary.

THE Sidmouth Hospiscare Appeal was just over an hour old when it was announced it had already reached �33,000. The news prompted a round of applacuse from 200 people who had packed the council chamber at Knowle for the official launch of the appeal on Thursday. Sidmouth Hospiscare needs to raise �120,000 which will be invested and the interest used to pay for a nurse and general expenses.
