Here are some highlights of the Herald from years gone by.

THE whist drive held at Sidbury Village Hall on Wednesday last, and organised by the Sidbury Troop of Boy Scouts in aid of troop funds proved most enjoyable and raised �5. Twenty-two tables were filled. Sir Edward Cave in the interval thanked players for showing their interest in the troop.

THE violin and organ recital given by Monica Denyer and Clifford Brown on Thursday afternoon was a musical treat such as is rarely heard in Sidmouth. The church especially lends itself to string tone. Miss Denyer’s beautiful tone and flawless technique were heard to advantage. Both artists are to be congratulated on the success of their recital.

50 years ago

PROMPT action by the staff and local fire service soon extinguished a fire which broke out in the staff living room at the York Hotel on Tuesday. Minor damage was caused to the interior of the staff rooms. Eric Colcutt, head waiter, who found clothing and an armchair burning, was aided by Leslie Phillips to use fire extinguishers on the blaze until the arrival of the Fire Brigade.

ON Sunday last, Army Cadets from Sidmouth, Exmouth and Newton Poppleford celebrated the centenary of the Army Cadet Force with a church parade at Sidmouth, at which they were accompanied by contingents of the Sidmouth units of the Girls’ Training Corps and the Sea Rangers.

THE police helicopter was used to lift five people from a beach between Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton on Saturday evening. Two ramblers on cliffs near Otterton spotted the five walking to Chiselbury beach, where they were trapped by the tide. After the couple reported what they saw to Budliegh Salterton police station, the helicopter found the five. Two were wet, but nobody was injured. They were all airlifted to the top of the cliff and made their own way home.

SIDMOUTH’S proposed experimental one-way traffic system is expected to clear its first hurdle on Monday when it goes before the East and Mid Devon highways committee. The recommendation to members is to request the county council’s planning and transportation committee to approve the experiment, which will then be brought into force next May and run through the busy summer season.
