SIDMOUTH S Twinning Circle has nearly reached its target of £5,000 to meet the costs of funding a visit from Le Locle residents in October.
SIDMOUTH'S Twinning Circle has nearly reached its target of £5,000 to meet the costs of funding a visit from Le Locle residents in October.
The Circle, which organises and conducts Sidmouth's link with the Swiss town, discussed the visit at its annual meeting last week.
The other main business of the meeting, chaired by Norma Pearce, was the announcement of an auction to be held at All Saints' Church Hall on Friday, June 12.
"Many pledges and items have already come forward," said John Pearce, secretary.
He said of the 30 members who attended the annual meeting, half were actively involved in the Circle's work, eliminating any "us-and-them" feel.
Mr Pearce said: "Arranging the hospitality needed for 20 or more visitors is well under way, and details are being worked out for their programme.
"A major event will be a celebratory dinner to mark the 25th anniversary of the twinning link."
He said funds raised will cover the visitors' costs but locals would pay their own way.
The Circle is now almost 60-strong, and welcomes new members. Being a member does not mean committing to hosting a Swiss visitor.
"Obviously some French helps, but most Swiss have some English, many speak it well, and managing the two languages can be great fun."
Norma Pearce said: "We simply don't believe that only 60 in all of Sidmouth want to know about one of the most fascinating countries in Europe."
