PICTURE postcards are part of everyone s holidays, none more so than those visiting Sidmouth during its halcyon summers.

PICTURE postcards are part of everyone's holidays, none more so than those visiting Sidmouth during its halcyon summers.

Evelyn Lankester from Summerfield, Sidmouth, owns a marvellous collection of postcards and photos from Sidmouth's past, has some unusual ones that were produced for the holiday market more than 50 years ago.

They show colourful drawings of cars and sidecars and animals and each has, tucked away, a hidden concertina of sepia views of Sidmouth landmarks, from pictures of the Duchess of Devonshire steamer to seafront beach views and the River Sid at The Ham.

With New Year upon us, and thoughts of summer holidays in the sunshine around the corner, how delighted people must have been back then to receive one of these cards, packed with Sidmouth views, rather than some of the bland offerings we get today from around the world.

Happy New Year from Nostalgia. If you would like to share any memories of Sidmouth past, please call reporters on (01395) 515191.
