A large hole has forced the closure of the road between Ottery St Mary and West Hill ‘until further notice’.
Heavy rainfall caused a culvert to collapse at Foxenhole Mill - leaving a chasm of around one metre wide.
County highways chief Stuart Hughes said: “Inspections revealed that the damage is larger than first thought. Due to the extent of the damage, there is not enough road width to use temporary lights and, unfortunately, the road will be closed until further notice.”
