STAGECOACH'S troubles in Sidmouth resurfaced this week after residents complained the company was keeping double deckers at Potburys' Yard, in breach of planning permission. Stagecoach moved its buses back to the yard after losing a long-running planning battle to keep them at a new site on the Alexandria Road Industrial Estate. Sidmouth Sidford county councillor Stuart Hughes said: "Since they have gone back, I have had complaints about visual intrusion, a lot of people are upset about it." Mr Hughes suggested the company gets together with East Devon District Council to see if a more permanent solution could be found. Richard Stevens, operations director at Stagecoach, said: "We had a previous arrangement with planning permission to put five buses at Potburys' Yard. "These were there before we moved to the Alexandria Road Industrial Estate and since then we have scaled back the numbers." Mr Stevens said, as far as he was aware, the fact double deckers were there was not an issue. "If someone tells us something to the contrary, we will deal with that at the time," added Mr Stevens. An EDDC spokesman said: "Planning permission to store buses at Potburys' Yard was granted in May 2002. "Among the conditions were that a maximum of five buses should be parked on the site at any one time and that no bus should be larger than 28 seats." He said they had received complaints about the size of buses in 2005 but no action was taken. He added should EDDC continue to receive complaints about larger buses being parked on the site, enforcement officers would investigate and the matter may be subject to review.
