Competitors took their produce to a pub after Sidbury Fair bosses announced the annual event would not feature a horticultural show.

Red Lion Inn owner Richard Spiteri hosted a vegetable and flower show that raised an ‘incredible’ £556.58 for Devon Air Ambulance.

He said: “There will not be a horticultural show in Sidbury Fair week so a few locals – Lester Cole, Suzanne Delasalle and Gareth Jones – organised for a smaller scaled down version. We had a great response and many entries. Paul ‘Chalky’ White auctioned them off and raised £556.58, which is incredible!”

Entrants grew tomatoes, green beans, courgettes, potatoes and other veg, and also put together floral displays. Tony Guest was the worthy winner of the ‘best in show’ award.

Sidbury Fair Week, from September 9 to 17, will feature a scarecrow competition, a fun run and the traditional Hot Pennies.
