Rogue traders have been preying upon vulnerable Sidmouth residents and attempting to take large amounts of money while doing no work.

Police are urging householders to exercise caution in the wake of a recent spate of reported doorstep scams operating in the town.

PC Steve Lee, of Sidmouth’s neighbourhood policing, team said: “Police, together with Trading Standards, are investigating a report of a scam whereby elderly people are targeted and asked for money in cash for building work which has in fact not been carried out. “The public are asked to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or persons to police at the earliest opportunity. “Please remember to only have work carried out by recognised professionals, or those who have been recommended to you by friends. Ensure that you get a quote for the works before they start and an invoice before making any payment, please do not pay in cash.

“Make sure you know who is carrying out the works and if in doubt do not let them into your home.”

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Trading Standards said: “Be suspicious of anyone you do not know.

“If someone is looking for work or offering services, don’t rush to agree or sign any documents. It is a good idea to seek a second opinion before agreeing to any work.”

If concerned, people are advised to contact Trading Standards by calling 0845 4040506 or visit: www.tradingstandards.gov.uk.

In the event someone feels threatened, they can contact the police by dialling 101 or e-mail: 1@devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk. In an emergency, dial 999 for police.

Anyone with information about the scam is asked to contact police by calling 101 and quoting crime reference: CR/087616/15.
