A supermarket that always lets staff respond when duty calls has handed a cheque for £666 to Sidmouth Lifeboat.

Customers voted for the charity throughout July and August in the Waitrose Community Matters scheme, which distributes cash to good causes.

Guy Russell, the lifeboat’s senior coxswain, said: “As an organisation that is very community spirited – we are run by locals, save locals and locals raise money for us – it fits in very nicely.

“Waitrose support us in another massive way, by allowing their staff to run out when the pager goes.

“At one point, three of our crew were Waitrose employees and at any given moment the shelves could be left empty and the tills deserted when the coastguard decided Sidmouth Lifeboat needed to go to the rescue.”

The cheque was presented by Waitrose employee Julie Marish, whose husband Phil has been a dedicated crew member for many years.
