Literary fans are set to enjoy guided walks around Sidmouth celebrating this year’s Independent Bookshop Week (IBW).

On Saturday 19 and Saturday 26, Winstone’s Independent Bookshop in Sidmouth will be hosting literary walks led by Sidmouth Museum to mark IBW (19-26 June 2021).

The walks, which start at 10.30am, are just a couple of the hundreds of real and virtual events taking place at bookshops across the UK to mark the occasion.

Carl East from Winstone’s said “We look forward to seeing our customers discover more of the town's literary past. It’s a perfect way to mark the annual event of Independent Bookshop Week.”

The two walks are free to attend, and spaces can be booked on Winstone’s or Sidmouth Museum’s websites or by calling 03195 579969. On the day walkers can meet under the Blue Plaque outside the bookshop, marking its past as Chick’s Lace Shop, or pop inside to browse a range of books from the Sidmouth Museum on the town's past.

Carl said: “The first 100 customers at Winstone’s to spend £10 during the week will also be given a free £5 book token to spend, we are grateful for the generosity of our returning customers, it's lovely to be able to give them a ‘thank you’ for shopping locally.
“On Friday 25 June, Scala Radio will announce the winners of the Indie Book Awards, the prize for the best paperbacks of the summer, voted for by readers and booksellers across the country.
“IBW will be a busy week for us, we also have an away day with a stall at the Exeter City of Literature book market at Powderham Castle.”

In the week following IBW, the annual Sidmouth Literary Festival will be making a return but in a virtual format. Going online has given the festival the advantage of being able to present high profile authors such as David Mitchell, Naomi Ishiguro and Terry Waite who may not have been able to travel to the town.

You can visit Winstone’s stall at the Old Riding School in Powderham Castle on Sunday, June 20 from 11am to 4pm - more details available at www.exetercityofliterature.com.
