Charity is urging householders to be vigilant in the wake of several doorstep scams

The chairman of Sidmouth Hospiscare has issued a warning against giving donations to cold callers following reports of bogus doorstep collectors.

An alert has been raised in the wake of several alleged incidents, in which a man - described as being in his 50s, chunky, untidy and carrying a green and white golf umbrella - approached households asking for donations to the charity.

Chairman of Sidmouth Hospiscare Dr Barry Lowden issued a statement to clarify the charity does not make door-to-door collections and confirmed the man has no association with Sidmouth Hospiscare or Hospiscare in Exeter.

The charity says there have been several reported incidents which have been registered with police and has asked anyone who is approached in this manner to notify officers by calling 101, or e-mail: 101@devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk.

People are reminded to ask for identification from anyone who calls at their door.
