A SIDMOUTH councillor has solved the mystery of a wedding photo which was unearthed a few weeks ago by an Exeter man.

Graham Liverton, of Tyrrell Mead, contacted the Herald after reading an article in last week's paper about a man who is trying to find out about his mother's mysterious past.

Peter Yates, 73, recently came across the photo, which is taken outside of Sidmouth Parish Church in the 1940s and shows his mother, Dorothy Yates nee Pearse.

Dorothy, second on the top left, was born in Exeter and was adopted by a Sidmouth couple, both of whom Peter never met.

He knows very little of his mother's past and did not recognise any of the people in the photo.

But Graham recognised the married couple as his mother and father, Stella nee Adams and Raymond Liverton.

Both born in Sidmouth they married at Sidmouth Parish Church in 1944.

Graham's father was a sergeant in the Royal Air Force and, although it was unusual to have a white wedding during the war, he brought the white silk to Sidmouth from West Africa for Stella's wedding dress.

Graham said: "My Aunt Mavis is one of the bridesmaids, sister to my dad, but does not know who the lady in question is, as she was on my mother's side.

"I think possible she worked with my mother who worked at International, Trumps and Goviers china shop at some stage.

"Both my parents have died, father ten years ago and my Mother a year ago on the 23rd December.

"I am afraid neither I or my brother, Alan, know who Dorothy Pearse is but after Christmas I will look out the photos we have and see if we can find out any more information."

Pictured in the photo are Stella's parents John and Leah Adams and her sister, Dora, Raymond's mother and also his sister, Lorna.

The page boy is Mike Lucas, who is a friend of the family. Also pictured are Graham's great uncle and great aunt as well as his Godmother, Elsie and his brother's Godmother, Lily.

If you can shed any light on Dorothy Yates nee Pearse contact Beth Henzell at the Herald on (01395) 515191.
