A West Hill coach has been recognised as one of the district’s sports champions for his ‘infective enthusiasm’ and ‘dedication’.
Doug Ferguson was nominated by the parish council for his work with West Hill Wasps Football Club, where he has helped as a coach for five consecutive seasons.
He was invited along with 13 other chosen individuals to attend the district council’s chairman’s garden party to thank them for their contribution to the community.
Margaret Hall, chairman of the parish council, said Doug juggles work, family and coaching to make a real difference to the lives of local children.
She added: “Doug’s inclusive ethos which emphasises the importance of hard work and being a team player, just as much as the actual football skills themselves, are values which his team will take forward with them.

Cllr Hall said: “Doug somehow manages to juggle a busy work and family life with running a football team: the training, the matches, the administration. Unceasingly committed - whatever the weather- always positive, encouraging and enthusiastic.
“No one could ask for a more caring coach: caring towards the club and caring towards the team. Both motivated and motivating, Doug is sharing his passion for football with the next generation and is a true sports champion in every sense.”
At the chairman’s garden party, Doug was presented with a certificate.
Councillor Andrew Moulding, Chairman of East Devon District Council, said: “It’s a privilege to honour our sporting champions who very often are the lifeblood of their communities.
“They put their own time in to helping people young and old get the very best out of life and they deserve our praise for their dedication.”
