Sidmouth Science Festival returns with a programme showing how science affects every day life.

With more than 60 events taking place across the town between October 3 and 15, organisers say there is plenty for all the family.

Now in its sixth year, the festival’s general theme is ‘science in our lives’ demonstrated through hands on activities and lectures aimed at all ages and abilities.

A spokeswoman said: “The beauty of science and technology is that they are responsible for today’s high standards of living, longer healthier lives and all of the modern conveniences we rely on and take for granted every single day. So, come and join us, get involved and have some fun while maybe learning something new.”

Launching the festival on Tuesday is Dr John Chilton, senior lecturer in cell biology at the University of Exeter medical school, with his talk fishing for the Causes of Alzheimer’s... Are protein rods the right angle?

The talk is free and will begin at 3pm, in the Cellar Bar, at Kennaway House.

Other speakers includes Dame Julia Slingo, retired chief of the Met Office, who will lead a talk about Ada Lovelace on Tuesday, October 10.

Visitors can also take trips to Lyme Bay Winery, Otter Brewery and take an historic walk around the Norman Lockyer Observatory.

Schools from across East Devon will showcase their work at an art exhibition running from October 12 until the end of the festival in Kennaway House.

The popular Super Science Saturday and Sunday Funday are the final two events on October 14 and 15.

The fun day, which is held at the Norman Lockyer Observatory, will feature the popular jet car race, experiments and more as part of its theme ‘the need for speed’.

Entry to the observatory is cash only and costs £8 for adults and is free for children.
