The bright lights of the carnival circuit will arrive in Ottery this weekend.

Sammy Cake, chief marshal, said there would be floats, walking entries and majorette groups participating in this year’s event on Saturday, October 27.

Diversions will be in place across the town with road closures enforced between 7pm and 10pm.

Road affected include routes leading to the town centre from Strawberry Lane, Slade Road and Furzebrook Junction.

The Exeter Road leading to Finnimore industrial estate, from the King’s School cross, will be closed at 3pm and reopens at 8pm. Marshals will be directing traffic to Salston Cross until 7pm. The diversions will then change with cars diverted through to Tipton St John, to circle back round into the town via Tip Hill, Longdogs Lane and Slade Road.

In the run up to the carnival, the organising committee has planned a week of events for all ages, which started at the weekend with music from Jabrock and a family treasure hunt.

On Thursday (October 25), youngsters will be able to make some spooky crafts with a Halloween themed afternoon from 2pm to 4pm before trying their luck at family choclate bingo at 6.30pm. Both events take place in the Old Boys School.

On Carnival day itself, there will be cake stalls, children’s fancy dress and the guy competition all taking place in The Institute.

Last entries for fancy dress and guys will be at 1.30pm before the crowning of the carnival queen at 2pm.

Taking part on the royal float is Mia Kelly, Queen, Holly Keen and Rihanna Hutchinson as princesses. Hayley Blackmore, Lexi Whitcomb and Lucy Ryder will be crowned at a ceremony on the day.

The party does not stop there as Tar Barrels quickly approaches on November 5 and more events on the cards for families.

Children can expect to have a frighteningly good time at a Halloween themed party on October 31 at Ottery Football Club. Between 5pm and 7pm guests can take part in a fancy dress competition, party game and dance.

The night costs £2 per child and is aimed at youngsters aged 12 and under, who must be accompanied by an adult.

To see in November, residents can test their knowledge at a quiz night at the cricket club on November 1 or indulge themselves with a weekend treat on November 2 with a pamper evening at the Football Club – Tickets available at Pearsons.

The final event before Ottery is packed with visitors on bonfire night is a coffee morning at Coleridge Pre-school. Table top stalls, carnival merchandise, tombola, raffle from 10am to 12.30pm.
