Long awaited restoration works have finally begun to convert the former Salston Manor Hotel into apartments.

Builders have arrived on site to restore the Grade II listed building to its ‘former glory’ after plans were approved for the restoration and conversion of the building to 27 flats four years ago.

The development director for Salston Manor Developments Limited said the project is concentrating on building a selection of one, two and three bedrooms ‘prestigious’ properties in the main building.

The project manager said: “We have now commenced on the site. We are in the process of erecting the scaffolding, the builders have now arrived and commenced internal works and refurbishment.

“It’s good news for Ottery to restore it back to its former glory and to convert it to luxury apartments.

“There will be a brand new roof, all the brick work is going to be restored to its natural beauty, the windows are to be repaired or replaced. The biggest thing are the chimneys.”

The project manager added that roofers and the brick layers are due on site next month to begin repair works to the chimney stacks and build a new roof.

He estimated the project will take a year with the first of the flats to be ready for pre-sale in October.

As part of the works, the developer is looking for residents to send in their photos of the building at its height to frame in the entrance.

The project manager said: “Quite a few people come up here. I have met people who have got married here, who have had functions here, they come from all parts of the country. A lot of people in Ottery learnt to swim here, there are a lot of memories.”

He asked anyone to send in photos to email the Herald at clarissa.place@archant.co.uk.
