Work is now underway to put walls on classrooms at a Ugandan school after a fundraiser smashed her £1,000 target during FolkWeek.
Hannah Vicarage set up shop in the Sidmouth Prayer Room during the festival to sell African crafts and decorate people’s skin with henna for Gideon’s Trust, which was set up by her parents, David and Jo Williams.
She took £2,400, just shy of the £2,700 total cost of the works – but within hours of thanking people online her friends and family rallied to hit the target.
The Harcombe Fields resident said: “Within about two hours of the post, through offers of £20 here and there we had met the total! It was amazing – I couldn’t believe it. It was so wonderful to see people getting involved to make these kids’ lives better.”
The money will pay for a toilet block, new walls for two classes, cement for all the floors in Young Cranes School, and electricity.
