Yobs wreck Ottery floral displays

YOBS, who wrecked scores of Ottery floral displays by lobbing them into the river, have kicked the town’s community spirit in the teeth- say saddened residents.

Overnight stupidity between Monday and Tuesday ruined months of hard work by community volunteers after 15 flower troughs at St Saviour’s Bridge were targeted by vandals.

It is the second time in two years the spot has been ransacked by thugs. Police are treating it as criminal damage and have appealed for information.

The mindless act came just a fortnight after South West in Bloom judges lavished praise on the town’s floral features and community spirit.

“It just looks a mess,” upset Ottery in Bloom chairman Sarah Clarke told the Herald.

“It happened last year, but was nothing like this,” she added.

“We’ve overcome East Devon [District Council] stepping away and still come up with something really good where the community has come together – it really does fill you with pride, then one or two people come along and wreck it for everyone.

“Luckily it was looking absolutely lovely for the judging, but the idea is it’s nice for the whole town to enjoy all the time.

“We won’t be able to replace the flowers. This year they have ruined it for the whole town – and for what gain?

“It’s such a shame because they have no pride for their town and it makes you wonder why you bother to put the effort in.

“They are destroying the soul of people in Ottery pulling together as a community. Whoever did this isn’t wanted here.”

Passers-by said it was “heartbreaking” and Mayor Glyn Dobson branded it “disgusting.”

Ottery in Bloom member Keith Spittlehouse condemned the “blatant desecration?”.

“The plants on the bridge, generously raised and donated by Otter Nurseries, provide an attractive welcome to visitors. Will the numerous empty tubs encourage them to stay?”
