A skydiving Sidford woman whose mum has been diagnosed with terminal cancer needs the help of Herald readers.
Kate Broderick was just 18 when she discovered her mother had an incurable type of bone marrow cancer.
Now 20, she has vowed to plunge a terrifying 3,500 feet at Dunkeswell Aerodrome on June 10 in the hope of raising £1,025 for Myeloma UK.
The mum-of-one, who has only managed to raise £220 so far, said her mum Jill Wolfendale shared the heartbreaking news with her family in October 2015.
She added her mother, who is in her 50s and has four daughters and seven grandchildren, has a rare type of cancer that only affects 5,500 people in the UK a year.
“She is reacting really well to the treatment,” said Kate. “There are people that have had this cancer and have lasted 10 years.”
“It was really traumatic when we first found out, but as far as we are concerned nothing has been said about how long she has left. It is not going to go away, but she is doing really well.”
Kate said after finding out about her mum’s cancer it made her realise that no-one knew what was around the corner, so they should make the most of life and do the things they dream about.
“You can’t wait forever because forever won’t always be there,” she added.
Kate said Myeloma UK was a charity she really wanted to help as it supported people like her mum, who is a retired librarian, every day.
“My mum is brilliant and is the biggest role model...She is such a strong lady - you would never see her cry. She is someone you can always look up to,” Kate said.
“I would be over the moon if I could make that target, it would be everything. The money would go towards helping to provide information and support for other families.
“I don’t know where the idea came from. It was a random thought I had when thinking about what to do for the charity and I have always wanted to do a skydive since I was young.”
