POLICE have pledged to take a ‘zero-tolerance’ stance over the misuse of fireworks in Sidmouth this weekend.

Sergeant Andy Turner has warned youngster and adults they face prosecution if caught using explosives irresponsibly.

“There are a number of criminal offences you could fall foul of if you mess around with fireworks in public places,” said PS Turner, “those involved in any misuse of fireworks will be prosecuted. I’ve tasked officers in Sidmouth to take a zero tolerance approach.”

PS Turner reminded townsfolk it is illegal for anybody under 18 to be in possession of fireworks, and an offence to set them off within 50 metres of the centre of the road. St John’s Ambulance Devon CEO David Wirrich also warned: “Bonfire night can be fun for people of all ages but can quickly and easily be spoilt by injuries.”
