POLICE have pledged to take a ‘zero-tolerance’ stance over the misuse of fireworks in Sidmouth over the coming weeks.

POLICE have pledged to take a ‘zero-tolerance’ stance over the misuse of fireworks in Sidmouth over the coming weeks.

Concerned residents twice reported youths playing with the explosives in the town this week, and Sergeant Andy Turner has warned unruly youngster and adults they face prosecution if caught.

As fireworks become readily available for November 5 celebrations, PS Turner said his team will be taking a hard line with offenders.

“Police would like to remind adults and children there are a number of criminal offences you could fall foul of if you mess around with fireworks in public places,” said PS Turner, “those involved in any misuse will be prosecuted. I’ve tasked officers in Sidmouth to take a zero tolerance approach.”

A pair of youngsters were reported for playing with fireworks near Baker Close at around 7pm on Monday.

The day before police received reports of youths setting off fireworks at an address in Temple Street.

PS Turner reminded townsfolk it is illegal for anybody under 18 to be in possession of fireworks, and an offence to set them off within 50 metres of the centre of the road.

A Sidmouth resident this week contacted the Herald to ask fun-seekers to consider how fireworks may frighten animals.

St John’s Ambulance Devon CEO David Wirrich also warned: “Bonfire night can be so much fun for people of all ages but can quickly and easily be spoilt by injuries.”
