A completely revamped Sidbury play park could include a zip-wire and swinging basket if the council can find the funding.

Nearly all the play equipment at the Furzehill play area, which has been there for more than 30 years, will be removed when work begins next year.

So far, £30,000 has been set aside for the redevelopment.

Since a good zip-wire can cost around £15,000 and a basket swing can be about £2,000, East Devon District Council (EDDC) has now said it is investigating whether it can potentially source some funding from other organisations to add to the budget.

Sidbury young people and children have had their say and selected what they would like to see.

The results of the consultation with the children showed that the activities which were the most popular with them were climbing, spinning and bouncing.

Among the equipment they said they wanted was a climbing frame, roundabout and a ground-level trampoline.

There were also a number of requests for a zip-wire, a slide and swings.

An EDDC spokeswoman said the authority would now be spending some time trying to find extra money from other organisations.

She added the council will then put the requests to companies that build play areas and ask them to propose a redesign of the play area based on what the children want and the amount of money available.

The council will look at the designs and score them, basing their verdict on what the children and young people have asked for. The design with the highest score will be installed.

Councillor David Barratt, ward member for Sidmouth Rural, said: “I totally support efforts to pull in additional finance to add to the £30,000 already secured.

“We need to go through these next few steps so that the play area will be the best it can possibly be.

“I will be following the project timescale closely as I am really looking forward to actually seeing the newly refurbished area being used and enjoyed.”
