190 just too much

Sidmouth 3rd XI travel to Barton this Saturday for their final away game of the season after failing on Saturday to overhaul a Bradninch total of 189 at Bicton.

The match was played on a wicket made awkward by some early morning drizzle. A delivery from Paris Pinney hit Bradninch's Jarrett straight between the eyes. It cut his afternoon short and he was grateful for Anne Sobczak for taking him to A & E to get some stitches.

The team were missing Robbie Powell and Sean Priestley who were both away and also Graham Munday who was promoted to the 2nd XI when James Macey pulled out earlier in the week. It is unfortunately the 3rd XI who suffer the most with these late withdrawals.

Bradninch's total of 189 for 6 was a good recovery from 90 for 5.

Pinney made an early breakthrough when he bowled Dean and Tim Drake accounted for the other opener when he was caught at slip by Graham Bess.

Davey made a punchy 38 before he hit a Charlie Miles long hop straight to Bess at extra cover. Miles then accounted for Bailey and Leathes (one caught at cover by Jonny Watkins, the other bowled) and Sidmouth appeared to be in the driving seat.

However, the only other wicket to fall was when Greg Chaplin bowled Nott. Miles finished with 3 for 54 from 15 overs, Pinney 1 for 41 from 13, Chaplin 1 for 36 from 10, Drake 1 for 28 from eight and Ashley Caldwell 0 for 19 from four.

Sidmouth's reply started brightly with Tom Bowring and Mike Dibble putting on 25 for the first wicket before Dibble was well caught by the bowler Nott for 15. Bowring then fell for 16 with the total on 40.

Bess and Will Sobczak battened down the hatches against some tight bowling before Bess was caught at mid on for four with the total on 57.

Sobczak was caught behind for 23, Watkins was needlessly run out for 25 when he was going well, Pinney was caught for two and Miles was lbw for 10.

Drake hit some lusty blows before he was caught in the final over for 23.
