Exmouth SAC are holding a month-long Flounder competition and Kerri Browning, a junior, is showing others how to do it with a fish of 1lbs 9oz using peeler crab on a running ledger rig.
Tony Phillips also fished the Exe using both crab and worm baits, landing six fish up to 1 3/4lbs. Alan Lang fished the Tamar for three Flounders, using a mixture of Lug worm, Ragworm and Mackerel on a running ledger rig.
This is the time of year when some nice Spotted Rays can be caught from our beaches. Danny Hoyle landed a fish of 6lbs 9oz using a pennel rig baited with sardine and Kevin Elliot caught a fish of 5lb 14ozs.
A thornback Ray of 8lbs 13oz fell to the rod of Cormorant SAC member Lee Smith fishing at Hopes Nose, Torbay. Cormorant Sac also report that they held a competition at Slapton with mainly whiting and Dogfish being caught. The winner was Tim Hulme with Mike Potter and Rob Travis taking the next two places.
Alex Webb caught a new Exmouth SAC record whiting of 2lbs 2oz. Kev Madeley and Adrian Houghton headed for a Torbay rock mark in search of Bullhuss, with Adrian landing a new personal best of 10lbs 6oz. The surprise fish of the week goes to Paul Salmon, who thought he had a huge Whiting until he looked properly and saw a Sea Trout, which weighed 3lbs 8oz before being swiftly returned.
Ross Parham, skipper of Brixham’s Spot On, reported plenty of good-sized Pollack on the mid-channel Wrecks, the best a fish of 17lbs falling to a pink Sidewinder Lure. Saleem Ali and Aaron Colhoun fished a private boat also targeting Pollack, Saleem landed as fine Bass which was quickly returned.
James Trevett and Tom Travers of Honiton SAC fished out in Lyme Bay, finding ten species including Blonde Rays, Wrasse and Pollack. I fished with the South West Species League in Weymouth, and manged four species: Whiting, Conger, Blonde Ray and Spurdog.
