Under a glorious blue sky, Sidmouth Tennis Club's head coach Sue WIltshire and her team hosted what was another highly successful annual Christmas Triples' competition.
The format for this is that each team, named with a Christmas theme, is made up of three players who, after each point, rotate around their court in triangular format.
It's basically doubles' play but with three players. All the teams play each other, culminating in exciting play-offs for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.
Due to Covid restrictions, only 6 players at a time could be on one court but such was the demand, that three groups had to be organised.
While great fun, this is always a highly competitive event and this year didn't disappoint.
Both finals in the first two groups went to a ‘sudden death’ point, the honours being taken by the Roasties (Daryl Bass, Frances Ionov-Flint and DI Kendall Torry) and the Turkeys (Debbie Snelgrove, Jed IOnov- Flint and Patrick McGurran) respectively.
It was the Turkeys too who clinched the title in the final group of the day ...no doubt gobbling up the Prosecco prizes with relish.
It was a fabulously fun day of tennis for all and many thanks must go to Sue and her team for all their hard work and organisation.
Tennis, like most sports, is sadly off the menu at the moment but the Lawn Tennis Association is in constant discussions with the Government.
An LTA statement said: “The LTA believes tennis is a naturally socially distanced sport that is safe to play and gives people of all ages the opportunity to exercise with friends or relatives. Tennis is important for people’s physical and mental health and we will continue to liaise with the Government to ask them to allow players back on court as soon as possible.
“We know that this is incredibly disappointing and frustrating news for all those players, coaches, venues and officials involved with the sport, as well as presenting further significant financial challenges. The LTA will also continue to engage with Government to help ensure that the tennis community is supported through the coming weeks and months.”
