On a lovely sunny evening in Sidmouth our ladies played their second game in the National Top Club Competition, writes Carol Smith.

This time round the opponents were Crediton ladies for the competition that involved a four-wood singles, pairs, triples and rinks.

Jane Painter played the singles and was first to finish with a great score of 21-2 which gave the other three Sidmouth ‘teams’ a wonderful cushion of 19 points!

The important thing in this particular competition is to win either three of the four – or two wins will suffice if you do so with a greater shot difference than your opponents.

The other three Sidmouth ‘teams’ were engaged in close contests. The next result in was a 29-11 success for the team of Susie Bonnell and skip Jill Bishop. Both the triples and the rinks managed to keep their losses very low – in the triples, Jean Brimson, Karen Hollingdale and skip Lynda Dommett were edged out 21-17 and, in the rinks, Sandra Wheeler, Anita Mason, Janice Quinn and skip Eileen Hewett went down by a similar four shot margin, 15-11, which left the overall score one of 78 shots to Sidmouth and 49 to Crediton.

The Sidmouth ladies now travel away to Barnstaple on June 29. Once again, a big round of thanks must be recorded to Chrissie, who served up a splendid post-match light supper.

? Sidmouth bowler Jane Painter was tasked with a match at Honiton in the next round of the County two-wood singles competition, writes Carol Smith.

In the two-wood you really need to be focused, as, in this format, you have only 21 ends to play and not 21 shots as in the four-wood singles.

Which means if your opponent is way ahead of you, then you stand little chance of catching up as you run out of ends!

Jane won two games convincingly, but the third was a bit tougher as she was playing a Seaton lady that had already got through to the last 16 of the four-wood singles. Nevertheless, being one shot down going into the last end, she managed to bag two shots, and so won – phew! Well done, Jane and good luck in the next round.

That latest success ought to have got Jane through to the last 16 of Section Three A, but she has now been informed that she still has a qualifying preliminary round match to play against Liz Smeardon from Crediton!
