Ottery St Mary ended their Macron League Division Four campaign on a depressingly low note, beaten 3-2 in an East Devon derby at Washbrook Meadow by visiting Otterton.
The defeat, an eighth of the league season, leaves the Otters finishing their 24 match campaign on 36 points.
They currently sit fifth, but will be caught by Countess Wear if they can muster 10 points from their final four games against
The Otters could yet finish as low as seventh in the final table for Sandford can overhaul them by winning their last three against Prior (A) and then Sampford Peverell and St Martins both at home.
Priory are the other team who could yet climb above the Otters, they have five to play, but would need to win four of them to finish a point higher than Ottery. Priory’s last five are Sandford (H), Kentisbeare (H), St Martins (A), Pinhoe (A) and, finally, Thorverton (A).
It remains to be seen if there is to be a reshuffle of league teams for the 2017/18 season.
The current fifth spot might just be sufficient to get the Otters up again, but anything lower is likely to mean they’ll start next season in Division Four once more.
Although the league season is now done and dusted the Otters retain an interest in two cup competitions with a last eight Golesworthy Cup meeting with Otterton and a Grandisson Cup quarter-final against either Axmouth United or Honiton Town Reserves still to come.
