Wednesday saw the seniors at Dainton Park for the Vice Captain’s Away Day event.

The individual Stableford competition played in the best of spirits in improving conditions as the day wore on.

There were some outstanding rounds by a number of players and the challenging course was tamed by several. The outcome of the competition saw Brian Skittrall win with an excellent 39 points, closely followed by Doug Goodall with 38 and Chris Timms with 36. The nearest the pin was played on the eighth hole and won by Mark Laird.

The vice-captain, Bruce Harcourt, then took a team to Dawlish Warren for a match on Friday.

The team found themselves up against strong opposition.

The first two pairings of Bruce Harcourt with Brian Skittrall and Brian Coles with Roy Smith took their games to the 18th, but both lost out to two very experienced pairs. Club captain Ray Gunston partnered by ‘H’ Thomson showed the real quality of the captain and came in with a two-and-one win despite ‘H’ falling in a rabbit hole and injuring his ankle.

John White and John Searle battled well, but were unlucky to go down on the 17th, losing two-and-one.

Les Pratt and Paul Blay could not get into their match and were soundly beaten. The final pairing of Hugh Dorliac, Senior’s Captain, and Vernon Ruffle were always playing catch-up and finally had to concede on the 17th. .

The match was lost five games to one, but spirits remained high for the return later this month.
