Ottery St Mary bowlers began their summer campaign with a home friendly against friends from Ottery Short Mat, writes Michael Smith.

On a cold but fine evening, Ottery proved too strong for the short mat players and came away with a 67-39 win.

The best winning rink was that of Moira Griffin, Graham White, Shirley Fewtrell and skip Terry House.

Results are usually reversed when the return is played on the short mat rinks later in the season.

A few days later Ottery played host to Phear Park. In a very close contest, the rinks were shared at two apiece, but Phear Park won by a shot 66-67.

The best Ottery rink was Pam Baker, George Kille and skip Mike Smith winning 22-12.

Ottery’s first away fixture was a visit to Bovey Tracey. In another closely contested match, with the rinks shared two-all, Ottery managed to secure victory by just a shot 69-68.

The best winning rink (24-15) was that of Chris Hawke, Steve Goodenough, Molly Parker and skip Eric Saunders.

Friday club nights are now up and running, and all are welcome to go along from 6pm. Coaching and equipment will be provided, footwear should be flat shoes or trainers.

Today (Friday) Ottery are hosting and open day that will run from 2-8pm. All equipment and coaching will be provided; refreshments will also be available. Same footwear applies as on club nights.
