Sidmouth Warriors 5, Milwey Rise 3 Sidmouth Warriors Under-9s ended their season with a superb Long Park victory over previously unbeaten Millwey Rise, writes Chris Roberts.

A confident visiting side began well, but it was a slick counter-attack that led to Ewan Badcock firing Warriors ahead.

Millwey came back strongly and levelled with a wonderful strike. That led to a period of end-to-end action and both goalkeepers were forced to make excellent saves. With half-time looming a fierce strike by Freddie Eul Barker looked to have given Warriors an interval lead.

However, the old adage of ‘you are always at your weakest having just scored’ rang so true as the visitors restored parity almost immediately and the sides trooped off at 2-2.

After the break it was Warriors who made the brighter start and a superb goal from Charlie Roberts saw them regain the lead. The lead was extended by an Oliver Loosemore goal only for Millwey Rise to then lay siege to the home goal. Freddie Roberts made a number of fine saves before eventually being beaten for the visitors third.

That set up a frenetic final five minutes, but young Loosemore eased the home nerves when he netted his second to seal a fabulous victory.

Saving your best for last, was never more apt! The young Warriors can now take a break from football before returning in four months time as an Under-10 side.
