SOHC V 4, SOHC VI 0 SOHC V sealed the South East Division title with a well controlled victory over their in-house colleagues.

By a quirk of the fixture arrangements this in-house derby was left to be the final game of the season for both teams.

Clearly not an ideal scenario given that both teams went into the contest really wanting to claim the victory.

The fifth team to win the title and the sixth team to bag a first triumph of the season!

What transpired was a seriously close encounter! It was the power of the sixth’s midfield that nullified much of the fifths early promise.

However, Dan Vincent opened the scoring from a penalty flick after the initial short corner decision was upgraded as a result of a defender’s attempt at clearing the ball around waist height in the goal mouth with the opposition forwards in close proximity.

Thereafter the sixth’s threatened to break into the opposition D, but were stopped by some effective defending.

David Ackland nearly made it two when he self-passed, entered the D directly and shot powerfully against the base of the post.

Shortly afterwards Steve Ellison deflected in at the near post and nudged the league leaders a little further ahead.

Despite trailing by two goals the sixth team, led so well by skipper Nick Smales were still very much in the contest through to half-time.

After the break the sixth’s played a little higher which gave their opponents less time on the ball. The decisive third goal came in the midst of a series of penalty corner’s.

Charlie King injected, Mackie stopped and the resulting ball was deflected in by Ellison.

Vincent made absolutely sure of the points when he grabbed his second - tapping in from short distance following Chris Olive’s advance and pin-point accurate pass across the goal to the far left post.

Neither team let up and, although the sixths didn’t directly threaten their opponent’s goal, they connected well and enjoyed a significant amount of possession in the final third. Thanks to Gerald and Mike for keeping things legal.

Afternote: Minehead were held to a battling 2-2 draw by Chard, which means that Ian Mackie’s team end the season as the club’s first league champions!

Hopefully this will be the first of many titles for the Club!
