It’s been another great week to enjoy being an Exeter City supporter, starting with the 3-0 win at Morecambe, which made it 10 away wins this season to date, and broke the club record of nine achieved by Paul Tisdale’s League Two side in 2008-09, writes Gareth Hughes.
The win took the Grecians to fourth place in the League and just one point outside the automatic promotion places. Whilst that was more than enough to satisfy fans belonging to the East Devon Grecians, their week was topped when five first team players took part in the annual quiz, organised by Roger Constable on Tuesday at the War Memorial Club.
Around 50 local supporters took part, and the numbers were boosted with the surprise arrival of John O’Flynn, Artur Krysiak, Jimmy Keohane, Rhys Evans and Guillem Bauza who all joined in the fun and the raising of funds which the supporters group use towards work carried out at the Cat and Fiddle training ground.
The game on Saturday was a super result for many reasons; another clean sheet, revenge for the first home defeat of the season, a win with key players John O’Flynn, Alan Gow, Matt Oakley and Liam Sercombe out through injury, and Exeter’s top scorer Cureton’s two goals taking his tally to 18 for the season!
David Hughes a Grecian fan now living away, made the trip to Morecambe and was pleased with the team performance. “Every player pulled their weight. Their passing and possession were good and it was overall a great team performance . I was impressed with new player Mark Molesley who I have not seen before and Kevin Amankwaah made some good runs from the full back position”
The result brought to an end the Shrimps’ 10-game unbeaten home run and despite, the home teams bright start to the game, by half time City finished the stronger of the two sides but with no goals to show for their efforts
There was more attacking play from both sides in the second period with chances at both ends. Firstly for City Scott Bennett sent a free header over the Morecambe bar and with the game becoming stretched, both sides looked capable of breaking the deadlock, and it was the visitors who took the lead just after the hour mark .
Tommy Doherty showed composure in midfield and supplied a sublime through ball, which veteran striker Cureton took in his path before comfortably side-footing past Roche. The second goal came four minutes from time as Cureton and Keohane linked up well outside the Shrimps’ box, and the ball fell to midfielder Aaron Davies who crisply curled past the Morecambe stopper into the bottom corner. Exeter pushed forward again and Cureton completed the scoring with a ferocious strike that arrowed into the top corner.
A very pleased Manager Paul Tisdale summed it up: “Terrific performance, very confident and very strong. I’m very proud of the 10 wins. We have achieved it, but I’ve told the players it counts for nothing. What really matters is where we finish in the league”
The next game is this Friday evening when Grecians are home to Accrington Stanley KO 7.45 pm. This is a great opportunity to see City in action and hopefully see them build on last weekend’s success.
