Okehampton 2nd XV 10, Sidmouth 2nd XV 25 The Quins secured another away victory on a very sodden pitch.

With both teams only 14 players strong, the hosts played down the slope, scoring a try within five minutes.

Dogged defence and a bit of misfortune prevented the home side increasing their lead.

After 20 minutes Chris Aplin, under pressure fielded a ball inside his own 22, expertly passing to Ben Salter who took play into the opposition 22, before a knock on stopped a certain try.

Ben Ward up from the colts gave a very assured display at fly half, earning a Man of the Match award in his first senior outing, slotting two well taken penalties to give Sidmouth a slender lead.

Okehampton charged down a kick to score on the stroke of half time for 10-6 lead.

Playing down the slope Sidmouth were soon on the scoreboard Ben Pratt scoring wide out, with Ward adding the extra two points.

The momentum with the Green team, a few sloppy passes and wrong options, halted any more scoring for the next 15 minutes.

Okehampton tried running the ball up the marsh land when the ball was dropped, Ben Salter hacked the ball on twice from halfway and won the chase to touch down, Ward kept up his successful kicking rate.

Sidmouth scored one more try from Captain Stuart Bickerstaff who managed to keep his footing before touching down wide out and this time young Ward shaved the wrong side of the upright.

The referee rightly blew the whistle to end this match played on a pitch which really did make playing rugby very difficult.

The next game is against Devonport Services at the Blackmore (2.30pm), the Quins will be looking to avenge a defeat down there in the first match of the season.
