THE Devon Rugby Referees Society (DRRS) are running a course for new referees at Topsham Rugby Club on August, 21.

With the forthcoming Rugby World Cup taking place in New Zealand from September, local clubs are hoping that this will prompt more people to get involved, and refereeing is one option for people to consider.

Derek Blackburn, Referees Co-ordinator at Sidmouth Rugby Club said: “ Opportunities for referees have never been better, especially for young people as the DRRS provides support and mentoring to help new referees progress. We currently have two young referees within Devon on the IRB panel who were both refereeing in Romania last weekend. One of them, Sara Cox was the DRRS referee of the season last year, and with women’s rugby becoming ever more popular, I would love to see some girls getting involved at Sidmouth. For anyone thinking of starting the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award at school, this is a great new skill to learn.” Participants need to be over the age of 14, and attendance on both Sundays is required.”

Help with the course fees may be available for Sidmouth RFC members who are willing to referee junior games at the club on a Sunday morning, and anyone wanting more details should contact Derek on 01395 519855 or via e-mail to derek@sidonagroup.com
