St Luke’s Science and Sports College hosted the first of three Devon Schools Volleyball Competitions for 2010-2011.

Seventeen teams and over 65 young people endured a snowy trip to arrive at St Lukes to commence battle for the Senior Indoor County Trophy. The teams represented their School Sport Partnership (SSP) and were as follows: The Park School, Pilton Community College, Braunton School & Community College and Great Torrington School; The Kings School; St Luke’s Science & Sports College and St Peters C of E Aided School; South Dartmoor Community College; Eggbuckland Community College.

The competing teams were randomly grouped, in which they played a round robin format. From this, the teams were seeded and progressed into a knock-out format, leading to finals. Throughout the competition, the young people not only played in matches, but were also responsible for officiating and refereeing the games, which is a model promoted by School Sport Partnerships to develop young people as not only performers, but officials, leaders and volunteers.

The girls’ competition ended in a tightly contested final between The King’s School, Ottery St Mary, and St Luke’s, with The King’s coming out on top, 25-21.

The boys’ competition concluded with an equally exciting final between Braunton and Eggbuckland A Team, with Braunton winning 25-20.

The Devon Competition Managers would like to thank Denise Austin (Devon Volleyball Community Coach), Graham Pearson (English Volleyball Association), Ros Sutherland (English Volleyball Association) and the teachers for bringing their teams and, most importantly, all of the young people who took part in the competition – they were a huge credit to their schools and themselves.

This final is part of a calendar of competition organised by the Competition Managers for 2010-2011.
