SIDMOUTH ladies had a very good score against Exonia winning 68- 41 overall.

Team scores were: P Pritchard, S Cook, S Heywood, E Hewett 14-17; I Rogers, B Sparkes, P Harvie, E Stribling 29-13; S Miller, S Mison, W Limpus, J Bishop 25-11,

The ladies were not so fortunate in the second match of the Lane league playing against ISCA who are a very strong club. However, they did score two points due to a spectacular score of 26-10 by A Smith, Z Johnson, B Sparkes and E Stribling.

This was especially pleasing as, for Ann and Zena, it was their first away match.

Congratulations also to Jean Brimson, Evelyn Clements and Eileen Hewett who won their first round in the County Triples against Honiton.

?This week saw the men in action against Dawlish in the Top Club.

A strong opposition was expected as Dawlish edged Madeira by one shot in the Denny Cup.

Playing on their home rink the fours, skipped by Colin Bryant, supported by Ivan Robins, Tony Holland and Tony Brown, were the only winning team, with a 17-11 score.

The two wood singles saw the narrowest of defeats for Ron Cook by one shot against Ron Smith of Dawlish. It took 30 ends to find a result for this match. Unfortunately, Sidmouth lost in the Pairs, the four wood Singles and the Triples.

On Wednesday, the club was honoured to play county president, David Butterworth, from Kingsley.

Many senior officials attended, including the senior deputy president Keith Young, junior deputy president John Ritchie and past presidents Gordon Thomas and Derek Viles.

Unfortunately, Sidmouth’s newly-elected president, Christa Turner, was away on Holiday and sent her apologies.

The match result was a win for the President by four shots overall. The one winning rink for Sidmouth was Ron Cook, Dave Lever, Peter Mison and skip Bob Seldon with a score of 29-16 against the President’s rink. A first class tea was provided by the ladies, for whom the President expressed his sincere appreciation.

Sadly, two friendly matches against Torquay United and Honiton had to be cancelled as the visitors could not raise a team.

It did, however, provide Sidmouth with the opportunity for the men to invite their wives and four other ladies to a ‘Family Bowl’, which was a very enjoyable Sunday afternoon followed by a very pleasant social get together.

A good time was had by all, with the team of Maurice Watson, Dinah Denning, Marian Watson and Ron Denning being the best winning rink of the afternoon.

In the National Over-60s Pairs competition, Ron Cook and John Mason, progressed to the third round with a 24-8 win against a team from Exonia. Their next match will be away at Madeira later in the month.
