Sidmouth Golf Club held the Captain's Winter Greensome at the weekend. The format for this is a two man Stableford team in which both players drive off and then play alternate shots from whoever's drive they have deemed to be in the best position. Thirty one teams of two took part which, considering it is still winter, was not a bad turnout. Scoring is difficult to judge and I was surprised that the winning score was only 40 points, this honour taken by the young pairing of Paul Sexton and Lewis Perry. A huge contribution to their score was a hole-in-one on the sixth from Lewis and I guess it didn't take too long to decide which of the two tee shots the better one was! As is customary for anyone who has a hole in one, drinks were bought for all (or at least anyone in the clubhouse). With the race night being held tonight (Friday), Sidmouth GC is really living up to its reputation of being a friendly social club. Results: 1, Paul Sexton and Lewis Perry 40pts; 2, Marc Shoobridge and Trevor Kerridge 39; 3, Ian Pugsley and Paul Hitchcock 39.This week's junior session was attended by 10 children which is a great turnout for the winter months. We worked mainly on the short game and using chipping nets - three teams had to try and chip as many balls as possible in to a net approximately 10 yards away. Although this may sound straight forward I can assure you it isn't. After this we went on to the putting green and had a small game where one person in the team of two was designated as the chipper and the other person had to putt the ball in the hole, James Butler decided on his go that the easiest way was to pop the ball straight in the hole, earning his team a Mars bar each. Well done to all the Sunday juniors and keep up the good workEARLY LEARNING: Pictured teaching one of the many Juniors that attend coaching on Sundays at Sidmouth Golf Club is Jim Jebson, back left. Jim recently qualified as a PGA level 1 coach, this means that on Sundays Sidmouth Golf Club now have two fully qualified golf coaches to teach the budding Tigers. Jim, pictured with parent helper Lawrence Hill, attended a two day course and was shown and taught all the requirements needed to qualify. After the intense practical side he then sat a written exam outlining all the Health and Safety issues associated with teaching Juniors.Sidmouth Golf Club is making continual improvements to the Junior section and Jim's award is just one of the examples of this. There is still have room for a few more Juniors for coaching and memberships so there has never been a better time to go along and learn and make friends in a safe environment.
