It was a great weekend for Sidmouth Town’s reserve sides on the football front, as the 2nds progressed in the Devon Premier Cup with a 3-2 win over Newton Abbot 66 and the 3rds trounced Alphington 6-0 in the League.

The 2nds were evenly matched with Newton in the early stages before a great through-ball from Oli Turton released Kieran White to slot the ball home. Sidmouth were then grateful to Ryan Windsor, pulling off a great save to retain the lead.

On the half-hour, another assist from Turton gave Scott Hughes the chance to make it 2-0. The Sidmouth midfield was in complete control and a quick ball from Kieran White set up Hughes for his second goal and a 3-0 lead. The visitors responded with a penalty to give them hope at half-time.

The second half was a proper slog, as Town gave everything to keep Newton at bay. Sidmouth were constantly under pressure but another great save from man of the match Windsor was crucial and, although the visitors did eventually grab a second, the Vikings held on for a deserved win and a place in the next round.

Sidmouth 3rds enjoyed a far more comfortable ride at home to Alphington 2nds, as Louis Adey showed his lethal touch in front of goal again, with the Vikings recording a convincing 6-0 win in the Devon & Exeter League.

The Alphington defence couldn't cope with Adey's movement, pace and lethal finishing as the striker took his tally to 10 in two matches with a range of calm finishing and accurate shooting from the edge of the box.

The rest of the team played their part as well in a fine all-round performance capped by Martin Hill's excellent penalty save near the end, which resulted in the first clean sheet of the season.

Hill even grabbed an assist when his long clearance sent Adey away to finish coolly from the edge of the box.

Alphington never gave up and did create chances of their own but these were few and far between, as the Vikings defence rarely looked in trouble and with the midfield adding strength and support at both ends of the pitch, a near-perfect performance saw the Vikings fully deserve their victory.
