As I write this week’s report, I am awaiting the final results from the Torbay festival, where, as usual, there have been some fantastic fish caught, including Bass, Mullet, blonde Rays, Garfish and Trigger fish. I hope to have a full report next week.

Beer seems to be place where pleasure anglers are heading at the moment to have as good day’s fishing. I fished from there last week with the Honiton SAC on a species competition, fished aboard two boats, Sambe and Orca where in excess of 12 species were reported. I was aboard Sambe and had a great day on the Black Bream, catching plenty of good-sized fish and keeping a few for the table.

Aboard Orca, Mike Spiller managed another first, this time after many years of trying, he landed a John Dory. What a year he is having.  Another was landed by the skipper, Stuart Pike, later in the week. Tim Hulme fished aboard another Beer boat, Lillie May midweek, and found plenty of Black Bream to nearly 3lbs, along with a magnificent Undulate Ray of 16lbds.

Beach anglers are still finding plenty of fish all around the area, Torbay is producing Mackerel and Garfish from beaches, harbours and rock marks. Wrasse are falling to worm and crab baits as well as to lures, and bass anglers are finding fish from all areas, open beaches, rocks and estuaries again to both bait and lures.

The shingle beaches to the East are still producing the summer species of Mackerel, Gurnards and Black Bream along with Rays with a few winter Cod amongst them. Grant Morrish fished one of the shingle beaches and amongst his mixed bag of fish found a good-sized Garfish. Alex Webb has again been finding some good fish to the East, including an Undulate Ray and another first for him a small Red Mullet.

Entries are still being taken for this month’s Fish of the Month competition kindly sponsored by Sidewinder Lures and Newbarn Angling Centre. Please email your catch reports and pictures to johnsherlockfish@gmail.com.
