It was a week where the losses dominated other results at Sidmouth and Ottery Hockey Club, although there were some notable exceptions.

On the men’s side of the club, it was the fourth team development side that claimed the biggest victory of the day, with a 6-0 triumph over East Devon 4. With many youngsters in the side, it was good to record a strong result as it always encourages participation. The first team also claimed all the points with a 2-0 home win over Bridgwater 1.

But the other two men’s sides were both on the wrong side of the results in away fixtures. The second team travelled to Bridport to take on West Dorset, losing 3-1.

With player availability again proving to be an issue, a nine-man third team played at Cullompton against Exeter and Culm Vale Hornets, and lost 7-0.

On the women’s side of the club, it was only the first team that claimed any points, with a 2-2 home draw against Cheddar 1. The second team lost 3-1 away at White Eagles 2, and on their travels to take on Taw Valley 2, the third team lost 6-0. Finally, the fourth team development side took on Honiton Hornets at home but came away losing 3-6.

A full programme of fixtures is lined up for this Saturday, so captains will be hoping for good player availability.

On the subject of those skippers, the SOHC social media channels has been running a series to meet the captains. Charlie Piper is the main man for the male first team and he has been with the club for seven years.

Becca Tedford is the ladies’ first-team captain and she has been playing the sport for 23 years, with this her fourth season with Sidmouth and Ottery.

SOHC is a friendly, sociable and yet ambitious Club located close to Exeter, with great facilities. New players, umpires and other volunteers are more than welcome - why not join them?

Whether you are an experienced player looking for competitive hockey or someone seeking more recreational hockey, they have a team to suit you.
