Some shore anglers are struggling to find fish at the moment, whilst others are enjoying success.

I heard of Bass being caught in the Exe and with anglers now allowed to keep two Bass over 42cm, I headed there to try for a fish for the table. Five hours later and not a bite, I headed home.

Martin Larkins form Plymouth and a few others headed to the South Hams in search of Plaice and had a successful day landing several good fish. Bryan Boardman however did find a good Bass in the Kingsbridge area, although not weighed it appears to be well over 5lbs in weight.

Boat anglers seem to be having the better luck at the moment with fishing just beginning to take off in Lyme Bay. Lewis Hodder took his charter boat on a trip inshore where they found many different species, including somewhere around 50 of the early Black Bream.

Also in Lyme Bay, Honiton SAC’s Tom Travers took his own boat to sea, where he found Pollack to 12lbs on the wrecks keen to take his slow pitched jig. John Bovey fished the wreck out from Torbay, successfully finding some Pollack and a nice surprise of in the form of a Cod.

Exmouth SAC held their presentation night where Tim Parsons took the top honours as best angler for the year amongst the many other prizes and certificates on offer.

Spring ponds held an open match on a cold day with a bitter wind and frost, which made the fishing difficult. It did, however, make for an exciting close-fought match with Alan Crouch taking top spot with eight Carp for 21lbs with Jason Fay taking the next place with a mixed bag of Carp and Roach for 17lbs 8oz.

The best Perch of the day weighed in at 1lb 15oz to the rod of Steve Furze. The best tactics on the day seemed to be a ledgered bait of either pellet or sweetcorn fished tight to the far bank.
